Making Graduation Stoles

Are you looking for a project to bring your community and celebrate your graduating class? Why not consider making grad stoles?

Our program coordinator Jenny worked with teachers at Father Porte Memorial School in Black Lake, SK to create moose hide stoles for the 2024 gratudates.

Big thanks to teachers Marie-Louise and Eileen from Black Lake for all their hard work on this project!  Marie-Louise and Jenny did all the cutting and sewing and Eileen worked with students on the applique designs.

Marie-Louise kindly lent her stole pattern to Sewcase so that we can share with other teachers so please reach out if you would like a template for your class.

This  gorgeous caribou stole was made by Rita Adam from Father Gamache School in Fond-du-lac. The hide is so soft and the fringe drapes so beautifully.

Rita kindly lent her stole pattern to Sewcase so that we can share with other teachers so please reach out if you would like a template for your class.

ADD BEADWORK

Adding beadwork or to your stole is a great way to add beauty and colour as well as designs connected to your culture. If student’s are not comfortable beading, or perhaps don’t have enough time, they could turn to a family member to add a special design for their grad!

ADD A BACKING

If you are adding beadwork, embroidery or applique to your stole, don’t forget to add a backing (canvas or interfacing work well) to give some extra body whether you’re working with hide or with a woven fabric.

RITA ADAM'S 2024 GRAD STOLES

We love this fabric grad stole inspiration from 49DZINE (below) which was printed for purpose, but with fussy cutting and careful pattern matching you could create your own version! The sewing part is so single, but you can see how effective it looks when it all comes together with the camp and gown!

If you’re interested in creating stoles with your class, and need support with this project, please reach out to our program coordinator Jenny (sewcase@soaringcircle.ca) for help! She can work with you to create a template and source supplies!
