Setting up Your Sewing Lab
We’ve put together some tips to help you set up your sewing lab! Every community school is different, so sometimes you have to get creative and work with what you have. If you need support in setting up your sewing space, please feel free to reach out to our program coordinator Jenny. We can look at the space you have and find ways to make it work for you!
SPACE
Find a room in your school that has enough space for your sewing stations where the machines can be plugged in safely and cords don’t present tripping hazards. You will also need an area where students can safely use an iron without tripping! Many of the schools we partner with use the arts and culture or land based learning rooms for sewing if a separate room is not available.
LIGHTING
Ideally a space that has some natural light, but it this isn’t possible, a well lit room! Even though there are lights on the sewing machines, it’s important to have good lighting as shadows can make it hard to work, and it can put strain on the eyes when concentrating on projects.
An organized space will make the teachers and students have a more enjoyable sewing experience. It will also help immensely with keeping things tidy as it’s easier for teachers train students on where things go!
