Sewing Machine Safety

Keep your eyes on your work!

A sewing machine has a needle that moves up and down very fast! You need to know where your fingers are at all times, so keep your eyes on your work!

Be sure to watch your work to keep your hands safe, and make sure you’re only sewing the fabric that you mean to be sewing together!

Shoes on!!

Shoes should always be on in the sewing room! (Yes, even in summer!) There are so many sharp needles and pins and scissors that sometimes make their way to the floor and folks walking around with scissors!

Try to be mindful when working so you don’t drop pins, clips or needles as this not only protects your feet, but also helps make clean up easier.

The Iron is HOT!

When using the iron, never touch the bottom (metal) part of the iron and always stand it up after use so you don’t damage the ironing board!

If you’re working with heat’n’bond, always use a drop cloth (scrap of fabric) to make sure you don’t get glue on the irons.

Traveling with Scissors

Carry scissors by the blade (with the blade closed!)! Never point you scissors at anyone’s face or body!

When you’re cutting fabric, keep your bottom blade on the table to help you cut straight and keep yourself

No Drinks by Machines!

No liquids near the machines! Spills happens near the machine it could cause damage! Always have your drinks and snack at tables away from the sewing stations.

When you’re wiping down machines, make sure that the cloth isn’t too wet so that liquid doesn’t get inside.
